In Germany, in 1892, Rudolph Diesel obtained his patent for revolutionary new internal combustion engine which has since borne his name; in 1897, first 4-cycle engine was completed and running, and in same year Burmeister and Wain, Copenhagen, signed contract for manufacturing rights from Denmark; development of various types of units is traced from that time, particular reference being made to work of Burmeister and Wain and installations for different ships.
