Diesel locomotives on French National Railroads, which haul heavy-freight and fast passenger trains on difficult profiles with numerous stops, have massic power at rim above 30 hp/ton, load per axle below 21 tons, coefficient of adhesion at starting above 0.33, dynamic stability close to 3 km/hr, and trucks with short turning radius; examples of locomotives, mostly diesel-electric, equipped with 4-stroke diesel engines supercharged with aftercooling; engines are either semi-rapid (rated at 2700 hp) for 12-cyl type or rapid (1500 rpm, rated at 2400 hp) for 16-cyl type; development of engines and operational experience.
