Model illustrating application of techniques employed is solid-propellant grain made of urethane rubber and case-bonded to relatively rigid transparent motor case, through which light beam can pass; transition from model to prototype stress is direct, since model material is similar to binder material in existing propellants; shrinkage stresses are induced by uniform temperature change simulating conditions imposed on propellants in storage; loaded propellant model is examined with polarized laser light source; resulting scattered fringe patterns and principal stress axes are used to evaluate stress distribution.
