It is now 24 yr since Johnson Line first suggested to G.Pielstick that he should design medium-speed four-stroke diesel engine suitable for marine propulsion; basic engine designs evolved were PA type, with bore of 175 mm (now 185 mm), stroke 210 mm and designed speed 1250 rpm (now 1500 rpm), and PC type, with bore 425 mm, stroke 460 mm and speed 425 rpm; article based mainly on conversations with Technical Dept of Johnson Line, Stockholm, relates experience of line since their first ships were so powered in 1957; oils tested, maintenance, cylinder wear are among aspects discussed.
