New system trend within U S Navy arising out of ship concept formation studies is outlined; impact of this new approach to shipbuilding on required reliability and maintainability programs is evaluated; trend toward total ship system engineering pays off in two areas, namely -- reliability and maintainability design and analysis against mission requirements; and consideration of reliability/maintainability in its broadest sense wherein all integrated support factors can be treated.
