When U S Navy's AGOR-3 class of research ships could no longer be modified to meet changing oceanographic requirements, new design, AGOR-14 class, was developed; new concepts incorporated included use of cycloidal propellers for position keeping and maneuverability, and improved compromise between standardized class design and individualized design by inclusion of options to customize research payload; basic requirements, cost constraints, work with vee and transom stern models, etc, are discussed.
