Survey of work in progress at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California, concerned with unmanned space vehicle planetary quarantine and sterilization goals; prior to Ranger program, there were only minor sterilization activities; Rangers III, IV, and V were not designed to be sterilized, and many problems were encountered when sterilization was attempted; quarantine allocation model, quarantine criteria, and sources of contamination are presented; contamination tests and results obtained; future trends.
