Lifting hypersonic configurations were optimized to produce maximum lift-drag ratios; simplified aerodynamic equations were written for generalized shape with ten degrees of geometric freedom; numerical searching routine was employed to ascertain optimum vehicle; derived configurations tended towards delta planforms when leading-edge bluntness drag exceeded skin-friction drag, and for alternate situation, planforms were trapezoidal; geometric details of optimal configurations are tabulated for each set of constraints; experimental correlation of mathematical model for aerodynamic characteristics was obtained by conducting wind-tunnel test at 14 Mach to obtain lift-drag ratio.
