Design and preliminary evaluation of low-profile bulkheads for launch vehicle stages and manned spacecraft crew compartments; 10 configurations are formulated which could yield structural weight reductions in Saturn-class launch systems by reducing vehicle height and skirt and interstage length; modified semitoroidal bulkhead (central ellipsoid surrounded by ellipsoidal toroid) showed that 12, 000 lb can be saved on Saturn V-type vehicle with 460-in. length reduction; of six bulkheads analyzed for planetary flyby crew module, modified semitoroidal bulkhead was chosen as most desirable concept.
