Examination of realities of current equipment experience indicates that reliability and maintainability of most aerospace equipments are far from meeting requirements of long duration missions, and some concepts currently influencing designs are not applicable to true characteristics of manned spacecraft environment; examples are given of analytical processes and design techniques which show promise of making progress such as environmental control life support (EC/LS); system design studies associated with Basic Subsystem Module Definition program; technique makes it possible to define optimum on-board spares inventory in terms of overall system weight, reliability, and maintenance time expenditures.
