Scheme, combining use of displays and optimal control theory, was investigated for application to launch vehicles during boost; scheme enables pilot to continually generate predicted fuel-optimal trajectory; problem of determining optimum steering function is converted into related two-point boundary-value problem; pilot solves problem repetitively by adjusting initial conditions on auxiliary variables so that predicted vehicle state as determined by fast-time model of vehicle satisfies desired end conditions; resulting trajectory generated by model is predicted trajectory for vehicle; particular example was simulated, consisting of boost to circular orbit; simulation equations and results.
