Two papers published independently in 1966 by B.B.Meckel and S.I. Cheng proposing that sputtering engine be investigated as method of space propulsion were reviewed; preliminary design of sputtering engine which will produce usable thrust in 500 to 5000 sec specific impulse range was optimized according to definitive set of parameters and high- and low-priority sets; simplicity of design gives it reliability and long life expectancy.
