Paper attempts improvements in analytical methods for detecting, diagnosing, and predicting faults in flight vehicle systems drawing on some techniques developed for Lunar Orbiter and Saturn V launch vehicle postflight evaluation; techniques are for data compression, automated inspection of telemetry data and optimal estimation of vehicle performance parameters; concept is proposed for integrated data processing system using modifications to existing techniques, to permit near-realtime fault detection, isolation, diagnosis, and prediction; emphasis is on sequential processing on only out-of-tolerance data; recommendations made.
