United States Navy is currently designing and developing deep submergence search vehicle (DSSV) which will be capable of search, work, and exploration of ocean floor to depths of 20,000 ft; influence of mission requirements and operational constraints on vehicle design is shown; effects on vehicle weight, endurance, and depth are examined against various design parameters, such as pressure capsule configuration, material buoyancy, power sources, etc; only small submersible capable of descending to 20,000 ft at present time is "Trieste," which weighs about 150,000 lb and has overall length of 67 ft; DSSV is now estimated at about 115,000 lb with length of 48 ft.
