Hull girder stresses, ship motions, and wave heights were measured while USS Edward McDonnell (DE-1043) was operated at selected speeds and relative headings to waves in various seas; characteristic relationships between ship response and wave height are given based on 55 test runs, each of about 30-min duration; severe whipping stresses were registered during 20-knot test run in high State 6 bow seas; most severe ordinary wave-induced stresses were registered in following seas; most severe overall stresses, which included ordinary wave and whipping stresses, were registered in head and bow seas.
