Starting point is lifting-line theory for single lifting line over lower boundary in presence of wind whose strength varies with height; next, theory of two lifting lines is carried out and numerical solutions are obtained; these results are coupled with results of analysis of chordwise pressure distribution to derive rational method for design of pressure distributions on sails; method for obtaining shapes needed to attain designed pressure distributions in use on cat- or sloop-rigged vessels is presented, etc. (37819)
