To provide maximum efficiency for navigation, shipping and orientation for pilots, floodlighting of 9-mi of water-edge shoreline was undertaken involving offshore fluorescent lighting of Gaillard Cut, seaward approaches to Gatun Locks on Atlantic side and Miraflores Locks on Pacific; factors to consider such as tropical heat, humidity, fungus, torrential rains, rising and falling tides, and backwash of passing ships; 8-ft 250-w unit with 96-in., 135°-reflectorized fluorescent lamp is used; aluminum reflector is formed to aluminum housing to aid its cutoff feature; ballasts and wiring were mounted inside housing, eliminating danger of failure due to fungus.
