After initial experience at Fairfield Mfg Co, Lafayette, Ind proving to satisfaction of customer that honed gears were equal in performance to ground gears, further research programs indicated that honing could be economically performed on shaved gears that previously were not subsequently finished; higher quality spur and helical gears are now produced at lower cost by honing; lead, profile, and runout characteristics are improved, noise reduced, and nick and burr removal costs lowered.
