Differences in mechanisms of noise generation and transmission between helicopter and fixed wing aircraft are examined; propeller noise consisting of rotational and vortex noise; basic procedures of acoustical treatments; external noise and factors influencing aural detectability of aircraft; techniques in controlling noise and development of Perceived Noise Level (PNdb); Port of New York Authority established 112 PNdb as maximum permissible outdoor level near flight path; helicopter and jet transport noise spectra for equal perceived noise levels are compared and it is predicted that helicopter noise levels will produce no real public disturbance; operational penalties.
