First United States large-scale closed-circuit TV traffic-control system for urban freeway research; this experimental electronic network is operated by Michigan State Highway Dept along 3.2 mi of John C. Lodge Freeway in Detroit; just off freeway, at about midpoint of monitored section, control center has 15 TV monitors and controls for remote operation of traffic-control signals and 14 TV cameras; each transistorized camera covers 900 to 1750 ft of road, having pan and tilt mechanisms, and turret lenses; 11 mi of video cable and 239 mi of control wires are used; possibility of optimizing traffic flow by computer programming.
