Sliding floor eliminates lost time in laying rail at working face and reduces time for switching loaded and empty muck trucks; it moves forward and keeps rail at tunnel face, thus increasing time available for drilling, blasting and mucking; each of sliding floors used in Snowy Mountains project in Australia is 430 ft long, 13 ft wide and consists of 14 sections; floor moves like caterpillar; heavy rail is mounted on outer sides to carry drill and ventpipe jumbos; self-contained hydraulic unit is mounted at rear of floor.
