French National Railroads have converted to 4-8-4 type, locomotive of 4-8-2 class originally built for former French State Railroads in 1932; purpose was to increase power of locomotives and to change cylinders from single expansion to compound; 4-8-4 locomotive being used to determine what advantages are offered by this system of compounding.
