Method involves use of locomotive as power source; first, by pulling "dig out plow" beneath ties, it removes old ballast; second, by pulling work train, it distributes new ballast; finally, by dragging "track raiser" under ties, track is raised, tie bed is smoothed, and track lowered onto new ballast.
