Negative pressure originating behind flat base of projectiles presents drag component termed "base drag"; same drag exists for airfoil sections, trailing edges of which are cut off or thickened and is also found behind certain sheet metal joints; formulas for calculating drag of tail turrets and blunt trailing wing edges; in case of thicker sections, such as blade roots of propellers, lift is also affected.
