Advent of high speed flight and necessity of maintaining aerodynamically smooth surfaces under high stress have led to increased study of sandwich plate construction as possible substitute for sheet stringer construction in airplane design; theory as developed for elastic behavior of orthotropic flat plates in which deflections due to shear are taken into account.
