Vehicle retarders are divided into driveline retarder located between driving wheels and engine, and engine retarder which takes advantage of engine's ability to absorb energy through compression and dissipates heat through existing cooling system and atmosphere; to determine effect of retarders on driveline, transmission, and engine, one of each type of retarder was selected for tests; results obtained are summarized providing comparison between ascending driveline torque and torque imposed on driveline when descending same hill, using hydraulic driveline retarder, engine retarder, or service brakes; comparison provides guide for design and evaluation of components used.
