Paper reviews constructions and design concepts of each brake type and similarity of wedge geometry to that of heavy duty hydraulic brakes is pointed out; factors influencing brake effectiveness are considered, such as actuator efficiency and friction materials; comparison is made of weights, response time, actuation efficiency, effect on drums, maintenance requirements, and special features, including adaptability of wedge actuation to split systems; features to be considered in selection of one construction in preference to another are tabulated.
