Description is presented of first modern port for coastal trade navigation established on west coast of Madagascar, at end of 60 km sound, accessible to ships up to 40×6 m, and 300 ton capacity; quay includes reinforced concrete floor resting on five rows of steel piles packed with sand or concrete; shocks caused by barges are absorbed by neoprene plate caps placed on piles.
