General comments on characters of steels in general use for ship construction; tendency of shipbuilders and registration societies is to maintain conservative attitude towards claims of new material; "Admiralty" steels acceptable to warship designers and naval authorities are too expensive to be acceptable for mercantile shipbuilding; properties of various new commercial steels are discussed, with special reference to tanker construction.
