Initial shocks of type that occur on airfoils at stream Mach numbers less than unity are shown to satisfy condition that local Mach number behind shock wave tends to approach unity; it is shown that mission of shock is essentially that of bringing local velocity back to local sonic value, that smaller shock is insufficient, and greater shock cannot be accommodated.
