Usual hauling practice in Continental coal mines has been by means of pneumatic locomotives; features of new design of Diesel locomotive, with no external moving parts except wheels; use of Vulcan-Sinclair hydraulic coupling of traction type simplifies control and reduces number of gear changes; most important feature is safety, as concerns both explosion hazard and physiological effects of exhaust.
