Illustrated report on conditions that led to permanent solution of highway 80 in California desert west of Yuma, Ariz; old highway was corrugated plank road that could be raised or lowered to conform with moving sand dunes; new highway of asphaltic concrete was built to meet increasing traffic; its location and level was determined to be safe from engulfment; results are reported beyond expectation, and maintenance cost decreased considerably.
