Fatigue life of metal part subjected to spectrum of load intensities cannot be adequately evaluated from results of constant stress vs cycles (S-N curve) experiment alone; experiments were conducted for different materials and under different loading conditions; review of data reveals conflicting conclusions; approach is suggested which would take into consideration differences, and yield solution which coincides with each of individual results; spectral loading problem is worked out, demonstrating application of approach to reliability prediction.
