Paper shows that proper FM of microwave transmitter can code ground scatterer return in such way that considerable signal bandwidth reduction can be effected with attendant increase in peak spectral power and reduction of certain critical error sources; requirements for FM waveform are presented together with numerical analysis of theoretical bandwidth reduction obtainable under low and high velocity and altitude; mathematical prediction of compressed spectral shapes; experimental equipment and results of flight test program.
