Literature review is presented which covers performance of five different types of plant on subgrade and pavement materials; plant types considered are smooth wheeled, grid, vibrating, sheepsfoot and pneumatic tired rollers; rollers considered are heavier units used in road construction; principles of compaction and theory of vibrating rollers; literature is reviewed in light of Australian environment.
