Application is examined in terms of vehicle integration problems; payload and velocity requirements for Mars round trip missions are used to establish propulsion system constraints; graphite and metallic reactors are considered, and effect of engine restart capability on mission profile and vehicle configuration are included; vehicle preliminary designs were prepared to study compatibility with Saturn V launch vehicles and Earth orbital assembly; design description for case of four man crew and 15 mo mission duration.
