Panama Canal is one lane canal, despite fact that it has 2 lanes of locks; this situation exists because each lane, in turn, must be closed periodically for maintenance and equipment overhaul; details of past and present lock maintenance procedures with present 2 weeks of lane-outage times; description of procedures being developed for use after 1964, that will require lane-outage time of no more than 24 hr.
