Technique for accurate experimental determination of normal vibration modes of flight vehicles using only simple methods of excitation is applied at Martin Co; because vibratory response of vehicle to sinusoidal excitation is due to response in all modes, modes determined by measuring amplitude of vibration are not normal modes, and individual modes must be isolated; tests performed on rocket and dynamically scaled aircraft model show marked improvement in mode shape, for higher modes and for closely spaced modes when technique is used.
