Review of problems encountered in operation of missiles and space vehicles, and particularly testing of propulsion systems, shows that many unexpected phenomena occur in high altitude or space environments; development of environmental test chambers for altitudes up to 150,000 ft, and environmental chambers for space simulation (pressures of 10-3 mm Hg or less); suitable schemes for first generation vacuum chambers developed, and new testing methods, particularly those of pumping rarefied gases from chamber, in research phase.
