New 22,000-lb electrodynamic balancing machine recently installed at Cowes, Isle of Wight, shipyard includes twin vectormeter indicating head; instrument automatically indicates angular position and amount of unbalance in 2 planes of rotor under test; 50 hp driving motor is directly coupled to 4-speed gearbox with output shaft designed to take up to 4000 lb end-thrust; deceleration of rotor is provided by regenerative braking, and it can be brought to rest within 1 min.
