In Jan 1964, Soviet Union launched cosmic system consisting of Electron 1 and 2, put into different orbits by one carrier rocket; choice of orbits; design and instrumentation of stations; feature of Electron 1 is its folding antenna and solar cell panels which open on command from time programmer after station has separated from rocket; on Electron 2 panels of solar cells are rigidly fixed in position; Electron 1 orbits Earth at comparatively low altitudes to study inner and spurs of outer radiation belt; Electron 2 is cutting through outer belt into interplanetary space to collect data on cosmic rays.
