After introduction to reactors and associated terminology paper notes main trends in reactor development towards simpler self-contained systems of reduced size; special requirements of marine application are noted and basic conditions in heat control and balance of coolant flow essential for safety are stated; comment is made on function of containment and its practical limitations and review given of reactor systems which have emerged in recent search for safe and economical system.
