Evolution of "standard" connections currently recommended for use in naval structures for joining stiffeners (toe welded Tee bars); 3 classes are beam to frame, longitudinal to bulkhead, and grillate intersections; structural requirements for each are discussed and it is concluded that connection strength is generally more important requirement than stiffness; "ideal" stiffness is difficult to achieve practically and often not necessary; structural performance and design data for each of recommended arrangements is presented so that standard design best suited to particular application can be selected.
