Concept and definition of automation are considered, and it is suggested that automation should not be limited to any particular section of technical equipment of vessel, but that its real task is central tie-up and complete grasp of all "part automations" employed up to now and not always recognized as such; operator will only determine beginning, modification and end of intended process; tasks of automation are discussed with reference to safety and economy; reference is made to automated marine main diesel engine with program control by Logistat, demonstrated by MAN and AEG.
