First methodological step in study of locomotion is establishment of relationships between load and deformation, involving vertical load-sinkage relation, and relation between horizontal pull and slip; paper is concerned with vertical sinkage; new set of equations is proposed and equations derived characterizing 3 types of behavior of soil under load, namely, fluidization, compaction, and collapse on basis of property of soil stiffness.
