Objective of mission is to obtain data on fields, particles, radiations, and solar phenomena in interplanetary space; at present, development of spacecraft is not approved; however, NASA is supporting certain research and technology tasks and additional mission and subsystem studies; scientific objectives and experiments envisaged; method for placing spacecraft in orbit about Sun and estimated nominal performance of 3 boosters in plane of ecliptic, Atlas/Agena, Atlas/Centaur, and Titan IIIC, all with presently available solid rocket as last stage; characteristics of trajectories; spacecraft subsystem.
