To alleviate earth landing loads on Apollo command module, configuration was considered by North American Inc consisting of command module and heat shield; command module and heat shield are connected by arrangement of active (oleo) and passive (crushable core) struts; equations of motion describing response of vehicle for impact landings are developed for simulation of operational analog computer; structural and inertial properties of vehicle are represented by normal modes of vibration in conjunction with conventional longitudinal dynamic-stability of freedom; simulation techniques and problems.
