Aspects considered that influence selection of materials for spacecraft are vacuum, particle radiation, and meteoroids; vacuum effects have not been serious problem; however, several spacecraft failures were attributed to radiation, and confirmation of suspected effects was obtained in laboratory; extent of hazard from meteoroids is uncertain; most urgent need is for reliable and accurate direct measurements of damage.
