SERT-I spacecraft, in final stage of development, will provide measurements of thrustor electrical parameters and thrust during 1 hr ballistic flight; tests to be carried out will determine validity of ion thrustor performance data, obtained in vacuum chambers; spacecraft, to carry two thrustors of different construction, will be launched into ballistic trajectory by NASA Scout vehicle; ion thrustor design and principle of operation; essential components are subsystems for propellant feed, ionization, accelerating electrode, and beam neutralization; instrumentation and telemetry; structural details of spacecraft.
