Long Lines was specifically designed to lay new type of cable system developed by Bell Telephone Laboratories, and began operations in 1963; ship was 90% completed by Schlieker Werft, finished at Deutsche Werft, and incorporates materials and equipment from suppliers in 8 countries; design of ship as well as cable and repeater handling system are described; propulsion machinery is of twin screw, steam turbine, d-c electric drive type; plan.
